Melbourne’s iconic Myer Christmas Windows are back for their 69th year, and 2024 promises a holiday experience like no other. This year’s theme, “An Irwin’s Christmas Story,” takes visitors on a magical journey with Ace the Eagle and Australia’s beloved Wildlife Warriors, the Irwin family.
Running through six enchanting windows, the display blends holiday cheer with the beauty of the Australian outback and the world of wildlife conservation.
Since 1956, the Myer Christmas Windows have been a cherished tradition, drawing millions of visitors to the city. This year’s collaboration with Terri, Robert and Bindi Irwin brings a uniquely Aussie twist, celebrating the family’s passion for wildlife and their conservation legacy.
The story begins with Ace the Eagle, who feels a “magic sorta feeling” and embarks on a journey filled with wonder and discovery. Visitors will follow Ace through six windows as he explores Australia Zoo, encounters a magical treehouse and meets a host of lifelike animals including leaping lemurs, meerkats, elephants, and tiger cubs.
Alongside the detailed animatronics of these animals, the windows feature incredibly realistic figures of the Irwin family themselves, adding a personal and authentic touch. Narration from Robert and Bindi Irwin guides visitors through Ace’s journey, weaving a poetic tale of magic, wildlife and conservation.
Led by Creative and Technical Director John Kerr, who is marking his 31st year with the project, the 2024 windows are a feast for the senses. From custom-built animatronics to intricately designed scenic elements inspired by Australia Zoo, each window is a testament to Kerr’s meticulous planning and the artistry of Stage ONE Productions.
The display features:
- Over 50 animated actions, bringing the story to life
- 30 unique animal figures, from playful tiger cubs to majestic giraffes
- Authentic details reflecting the beauty of Australia Zoo’s environment
- A poetic narration by Ace, voiced by Robert and Bindi Irwin
The Christmas magic doesn’t stop at the windows. Visitors can head up to Level 6 in Myer Melbourne’s Mural Hall for an exclusive production, Christmas at the Crocoseum, created by Terrapin Theatre Company. This show is inspired by the Australia Zoo Wildlife Warrior Show and offers even more opportunities to engage with the festive theme.
Myer’s Christmas Windows are open now and will run throughout the holiday season, making them the perfect outing for families and visitors of all ages.
